Bungie Buddies!

This documents how I installed 4 bungie buddies to make it easier to lash down soft luggage items on my Futura.  Bungie buddies are widely available at most motorcycle shops and also from various mail order houses, such as AeroStich Riders Wearhouse.

I wanted to install the bungie buddies on the black section of the sidecases.  This involves drilling holes in the case, which could compromise its water resistance.  I took several steps to avoid creating leaks.  YMMV.  I used a 13/64ths bit to drill the hole.  This leaves a hole which is just slightly smaller than the shaft of the bungie buddy bolt, so that it “screws” itself into the case.  In addition, I put a bead of black silicon adhesive sealant around the base of the bolt to hopefully provide an effective seal against the entry of rainwater.

You can see the bead of sealant on this bolt as I have started to screw it into the case.

I installed two bungie buddies to each case in these locations.

Bungie buddies in action – securing a dry bag packed with clothes.

I’ve ridden several hundred miles with this setup to date, only in a little bit of light rain.  The load didn’t shift and the interior contents remained dry – but it has not really been tested in a downpour yet.
